Introduction and Background
The Zambian NGOs eRiding Project is a non-profit ICT-support collaborative project sponsored by the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa (OSISA) with the content support of Ungana-Afrika (UA). The project was initiated by Rescue Mission Zambia (RMZ) and Non-Governmental Organisation Coordinating Council (NGOCC) who jointly run it, with a committee of other NGOs i.e. Zambia Association for Research and Development (ZARD), Young Women Christian Association, e-Brain Forum of Zambia and Zambia Association for Civic Education (ZCEA).
Initially, the project was to be carried out over a period of two years but in line with levels of funding being lower then expected and the need for good results being so high, the project period was reduced to 14 months by the Project Management Committee; The period is now running from January 2006 to end of February 2007.
Project Aims
The project has the following aims:
- To provide eRiding services (giving consultancy to Zambian NGOs in both technical and non-technical matters that help the efficiency of the recipient organisations especially in the area of ICTs).
- To streamline communication and cooperation among Zambian NGOs so as to allow an informed impact on society that receives services from many sectors of the civil society.
- To improve the civil society’s interaction with government which is so multi-faceted that there are many organisations representing civil society when working on different issues with little communication among them.
- To promote the advantages of Free/Libre and Open Source Software within the NGO sector of Zambia.
- To assist selected NGOs in switching to Open Source software.
- To raise public awareness of Free/Libre and Open Source Software usage.
Project Management Structure
Policy decision and collective decisions are made by the Project Management Committee which consists of eBrain, NGOCC, RMZ, YWCA, ZARD and ZCEA. However, administrative decisions are made by NGOCC who also handle the finances whilst RMZ coordinates the whole project to ensure that activities are flowing in tandem with set goals and other benchmarks.
